House of the Good Shepherd is built.

1870

Architect: Patrick Ford. It is located at 841 Huntington Avenue. Operated by the Catholic Sisters of the Good Shepherd, it was established in 1867, and located initially in a home on Allen Street, then in the Shirley-Eustis House, before building a new facility on Mission Hill. Its purpose is to rescue delinquent girls and young women from a “life of sin and shame,” and to provide “a refuge from temptation and a sanctuary of sweetness” for young girls, who are divided into three categories: “Preservatives,” “Penitents,” and “Magdalens.” After serving more than 10,000 girls and women, the institution moves to Marlborough in the 1960s. The Huntington Avenue property is purchased by Harvard University in 1965, and becomes the site of the Roxbury Tenants of Harvard housing development in 1977.*
